Why Troy Dancers Choose Baila

Troy is a college town on the Hudson. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute enrolls about 6,900 students, Hudson Valley Community College about 10,000 and Russell Sage College 3,123, so the city’s weeknights are full of people with a free evening and room to learn something new. Weeknights at Baila open with a 6:30 PM class on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Wednesday gets an early start with Zumba® at 5:30 PM; Beginner salsa meets on Tuesday, and your first class is free.

Troy already dances in public. Full Out Fest at Riverfront Park ends with a riverfront dance party open to all, Troy Night Out fills downtown on the last Friday of every month from 5 to 9 PM, and free Rockin’ on the River concerts take over the same waterfront on summer Wednesdays. Ever watched a crowd like that and wanted to join in? Salsa, bachata and rueda come from Caribbean Latin communities, and 5,453 Troy residents, 10.6 percent of the city in the 2020 census, are Hispanic or Latino.

Class night is a short trip west, about 16 minutes from Troy to Peter Harris Plaza on Troy-Schenectady Road. Felix Ortiz set the week up so you can start at any door and keep going: three levels of On-1 salsa, bachata on Monday, casino rueda on Wednesday and East Coast Swing with Bob Fullan on Thursday, with the SalSwing Social waiting afterward.

About Troy

Troy, New York: Victorian Downtown, Three Campuses and a Short Drive to Latham

Salsa classes near Troy, NY start in the county seat of Rensselaer County, a city of 51,401 people on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, just northeast of Albany. Troy forms the Capital District with Albany and Schenectady, and Felix Ortiz teaches Latin dance for all three at 952 Troy-Schenectady Road in Latham, on the NY-7 corridor that carries the city’s name west. The drive from Troy takes about 16 minutes.

The Mohican people lived along this stretch of the Hudson before Dutch settlement began in the mid-17th century. The community known as Ashley’s Ferry took the name Troy in 1789, after the Greek city, and the Town of Troy was formed in 1791. The rivers did the rest: the confluence of waterways and the water power it supplied brought the American Industrial Revolution to Troy, and around the turn of the 20th century the city was reputedly the fourth-wealthiest in America. That fortune still shows in its Victorian architecture.

The Central Troy Historic District covers 96 acres of downtown and nearly 700 properties, and it has been called one of the most perfectly preserved 19th-century downtowns in the country. Film crews have noticed: Ironweed, The Age of Innocence and Scent of a Woman were shot in Troy, and the series The Gilded Age filmed here too. Second Street holds three landmarks. The Second Empire Troy Savings Bank Music Hall at number 30 is renowned for its acoustics and an Odell concert organ. The Hart-Cluett Mansion at 57, a Federal-facade house, joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The Troy Public Library at 100 is built in a Venetian palazzo style with high-relief carved white marble. River Street’s Antique District adds cafes and art galleries.

Troy’s neighborhoods keep separate identities. Lansingburgh in the north was its own village, laid out in lots and incorporated in 1771 by Abraham Jacob Lansing; Troy annexed it in 1900, and people still call it North Troy. South Troy runs along the Hudson south of Washington Park. Sycaway sits on Mount Ida north of the Poesten Kill, between Frear Park and Prospect Park, with Troy High School and the RPI East Campus athletic fields. And Washington Park, a private ornamental park laid out in 1840 and one of only two privately owned urban parks in New York State, is ringed by Gilded Age rowhouses.

Three campuses set the weekday pace. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on 8th Street, the oldest technological university in the English-speaking world, had about 6,900 students in 2024. Russell Sage College keeps a 15-acre campus downtown, much of it inside the historic district, with 3,123 students in 2025. Hudson Valley Community College, a SUNY school on Vandenburgh Avenue, enrolled about 10,000 in spring 2025.

The outdoor calendar is busy. Troy Night Out takes over downtown on the last Friday of every month from 5 to 9 PM, with music pop-ups and a new theme each month. William D. Chamberlain Riverfront Park at 255 Front Street hosts the free Rockin’ on the River concerts on summer Wednesdays, the Troy Pig Out barbecue competition and Full Out Fest, which puts more than 100 dancers onstage and closes with a riverfront dance party open to all. The Troy Waterfront Farmers Market sets up at Monument Square and River Street in summer, Troy River Fest follows, and the Victorian Stroll arrives in December.

Latin rhythm isn’t new to the city. In the 2020 census, 5,453 residents, or 10.6 percent of Troy, were Hispanic or Latino. The Music Hall’s 2007-2008 season brought the Spanish Harlem Orchestra to Second Street on November 8, 2007, billed as fiery Latin beats to dance to.

From there, the dance floor is 16 minutes away. Baila Albany, Felix Ortiz’s third Latin dance studio, opened its doors on November 30, 2025, and it teaches On-1 salsa, traditional bachata and casino rueda at Peter Harris Plaza. Take NY-2 W or NY-7 W, and your first class is free.

Troy Salsa & Latin Dance Class Questions

Where can I learn salsa near Troy, NY?

Baila Albany Dance Studio in Peter Harris Plaza, 952 Troy-Schenectady Road, Latham, is 16 minutes from Troy and teaches On-1 salsa in three levels: Beginner Tuesday at 6:30 PM, Intermediate Tuesday at 7:30 PM and Advanced Wednesday at 6:30 PM. Your first class is free, and a drop-in after that is $15.

How far is Baila Albany from downtown Troy?

About 16 minutes from the center of Troy. Take NY-2 W or NY-7 W, which is Troy-Schenectady Road, and the studio is in Peter Harris Plaza at number 952. From RPI it's 12 minutes and from Hudson Valley Community College it's 17, so a 6:30 PM class is an easy evening trip.

Are there free salsa classes in Troy?

Baila's first class is free for new students, and Troy dancers reach the Latham studio in 16 minutes. Reserve a spot on Punchpass, use it within 14 days of purchase, and choose any class on the weekly grid, from Monday's bachata to Thursday's East Coast Swing.

Is it too late to start salsa as an adult with no dance background?

No. Tuesday's Beginner On-1 class at 6:30 PM starts with the basic step and the count, so first-timers begin on equal footing. The free first class lets you try it before you buy a card.

Should a Troy beginner start with salsa, bachata or East Coast Swing?

Pick the night that suits your week, because each style has a beginner door. Bachata Beginner meets Monday at 6:30 PM, Salsa Beginner Tuesday at 6:30 PM, and Thursday's East Coast Swing at 6:30 PM covers all levels. Your first class is free, so try the one that sounds most fun.

Can friends or roommates take a salsa class together, or is it only for couples?

Friends, roommates and couples all fit. Salsa, bachata and rueda are partner dances, and Wednesday's Casino Rueda has couples swap partners around a circle, so everyone dances with everyone. Bob Fullan's Thursday East Coast Swing class needs no partner, so it's the easiest night to bring a friend.

What does a drop-in salsa class cost compared with a class card?

Pay $15 to drop in, $50 for a four-class card or $100 for an eight-class card; either card brings the per-class price under the drop-in rate. A private lesson is $65, or $300 for five, and your first class is free.

Where can Troy dancers go for a salsa social after class?

Baila's own floor hosts the Thursday SalSwing Social from 7:30 to 11:30 PM, $10 on its own or $15 with a lesson, 16 minutes from Troy. Start with Bob Fullan's 6:30 PM East Coast Swing class and the evening runs straight into the social; a free first class covers that night's social too.
