Why Halfmoon Dancers Choose Baila

Halfmoon is a town of 26,245 people with a median age of 42.1, and its calendar runs on gatherings: Halfmoon Days, a summer Movie Night in the Park, and the Easter event, Fall Festival and Holiday Celebration that the volunteers at Halfmoon Celebrations put on for free. Baila adds a weeknight to that list, with Latin dance classes Monday through Thursday evenings in Latham, and a Saturday-morning Zumba® class at 10:00 AM.

The drive is short and direct. Crescent and Crescent Bridge sit about 14 minutes from the studio, Halfmoon Crossing about 15, and Town Hall and Newtown about 19, by US-9 S or I-87 S. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday each open with a 6:30 PM class, and Wednesday opens at 5:30 PM with Zumba®.

Felix Ortiz teaches the salsa, rueda and bachata classes, and both Tuesday’s Beginner On-1 salsa and Monday’s Beginner bachata start at the foundations. Reserve your free first class on Punchpass; the pass is valid 14 days after purchase, which leaves two weeks to find the night that fits your schedule. A free first East Coast Swing class also covers that Thursday’s SalSwing Social.

About Halfmoon

Halfmoon, New York: North of the Mohawk, West of the Hudson & the Drive to Latham

Salsa classes near Halfmoon, NY begin in southeastern Saratoga County, where 26,245 people live on 33.7 square miles, 32.7 of them land, running up from the Albany County line. Six places make up the local map: the hamlet of Halfmoon, once called Middletown, along with Crescent, Newtown, Coons, Halfmoon Beach and, to the southwest, Grays Corners. From Halfmoon Town Hall, the studio at 952 Troy-Schenectady Road in Latham is 9.3 miles and about 19 minutes away via US-9 S, and Felix Ortiz leads the salsa, rueda and bachata classes there.

The name comes from the half-moon shape of the lowlands north of the junction of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers, and it is also said to honor Henry Hudson’s ship, the Halve Maen. The Mohican sold the plain to Philip Schuyler and Goosen Van Schaick in 1664, a sale confirmed in Albany in 1667, and the first Dutch dwellings rose in the 1680s along the Hudson.

Halfmoon was formed as a town in 1788, while it was still part of Albany County. Its name changed briefly to Orange in 1816 and was restored in 1820. Clifton Park was carved from the western part in 1828, and Mechanicville was split off as its own city in 1910.

Rivers and highways frame the town. The Erie Canal runs along the southern edge on the Mohawk River, where the Albany County border forms the southern line, the Hudson River marks the east with Rensselaer County beyond it, and the Anthony Kill bounds the north. I-87, a six-lane freeway, follows the western edge, and U.S. 9 runs beside it to the east, entering town on the Crescent Bridge over the Mohawk. US-4 and NY 236 serve the eastern side, and Halfmoon Crossing, near Exit 9 of the Northway, holds Trader Joe’s at 3 Halfmoon Crossing.

Civic life gathers at Halfmoon Town Hall, 2 Halfmoon Town Plaza, which shares its campus with the Town Court, and Abele Memorial Park beside it hosts the annual holiday tree-lighting ceremony. On Route 236, Halfmoon Town Park at number 162 holds the Veterans Walk of Honor and town events, and the Veterans Monument at number 170 is where the town holds its annual Veterans Memorial Ceremony in October.

Halfmoon Celebrations, a volunteer nonprofit, runs free family programs, among them the Easter event, Fall Festival and Holiday Celebration, and the town adds Halfmoon Days and a summer Movie Night in the Park. On the Hudson, Halfmoon Lighthouse Park at 597 Hudson River Road has a kayak dock, an open-air pavilion and public restrooms.

Three school districts serve the town, among them Mechanicville and Shenendehowa. Halfmoon’s 1,546 Hispanic or Latino residents make up 5.9 percent of its population, according to the 2024 American Community Survey. Latin dance is a short weeknight drive for these neighbors: about 14 minutes from Crescent, 15 from Halfmoon Crossing and 19 from Town Hall and Newtown, with your first class free.
