East Greenbush and North Greenbush started as one town. The 1855 act that split the old Town of Greenbush created both, and they still share a town line, a county and the way to Latham: NY-7 W finishes every drive on this page, 17 to 26 minutes from the studio at Peter Harris Plaza. Together the two towns count 29,984 residents.
Latin culture is already part of the local picture, with 1,459 Hispanic or Latino residents across the two towns, 4.9 percent. Hudson Valley Community College’s southern campus sits in North Greenbush, and about 80 percent of its students come from the Capital District; from the campus it is a straight shot on NY-7 W to Troy-Schenectady Road, about 17 minutes.
Two doors open for beginners at 6:30 PM: bachata on Monday and On-1 salsa on Tuesday, each starting from the foundations. Felix Ortiz teaches the salsa, rueda and bachata nights, Wednesday’s lineup begins earlier with Zumba® at 5:30 PM, and a free first East Coast Swing class on Thursday also covers that evening’s SalSwing Social. The free first class is reserved on Punchpass and valid 14 days after purchase.
About East & North Greenbush
East Greenbush, NY is a Rensselaer County suburb of Albany with 16,687 residents, and the salsa classes near East Greenbush meet 22 minutes away at 952 Troy-Schenectady Road in Latham, by US-20 W, US-9 N, I-787 N and NY-7 W from Town Hall. Its neighborhoods include the East Greenbush hamlet on the Columbia Turnpike near US 4, Hampton Manor, Clinton Heights, Clinton Park along Sherwood Avenue and Prospect Heights. “Greenbush” comes from the Dutch het groen bosch, the pine woods that once covered the land.
The town began on patroon Kiliaen van Rensselaer’s land, where his tenants settled around 1630. It was set off from the Town of Greenbush on February 23, 1855 as Clinton, in the same act that created North Greenbush, and took the name East Greenbush on April 14, 1858. Mostly suburban along its highways and rural in the southwestern and northeastern corners, the town is crossed by I-90 and holds the western end of US 4 and the northern end of NY 9J.
US 9 and US 20 run together here as the Columbia Turnpike, the 1800 Boston and Albany Turnpike that locals call “9 and 20.” East Greenbush Town Hall stands at 225 Columbia Turnpike, and the ground behind it held a cantonment for more than 5,000 soldiers in the War of 1812, with a hospital, barracks and arsenal. The East Greenbush Community Library moved out of Town Hall into its own building in 2001 and serves nearly 30,000 patrons across the town and part of Schodack as a member of the Upper Hudson Library System.
Hampton Manor grew with kit houses from Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward, and the East Greenbush Central School District runs five elementary schools, Goff Middle School and Columbia High School on Luther Road, which counted about 1,230 students in 2019-20. On Hays Road, Prospect Hill was the home of Edmond-Charles Genet, French minister plenipotentiary to the United States, from the late 18th century until his death in 1834, and the John Carner Jr. House and the Craver Farmstead are on the National Register.
Outdoor space fills the rest of the map. East Greenbush Town Park covers 120 acres, with a pond opening to the Moordener Kill, a waterfall along the hiking trails, a playground, a softball field, two dog parks and Red Barn and Upper Pavilion rentals. FunPlex Fun Park, an amusement and mini-golf park, sits at 589 Columbia Turnpike, and Best Berry Farm at 1078 Best Road marks the Best hamlet area in the northeast.
North Greenbush, NY lies in the western part of Rensselaer County with 13,297 residents, and the Latin dance classes near North Greenbush are about 22 minutes away in Latham. Three main hamlets share its map: Wynantskill in the northeastern corner, Defreestville in the southern portion and Snyder’s Lake across most of the east, with Snyders Corner just north of the lake. The town runs two fire departments, Wynantskill and Defreestville, and spans parts of four school districts and three ZIP codes (Troy, Rensselaer and Wynantskill).
North Greenbush was created on February 23, 1855 from the Town of Greenbush, at the same time as the town of Clinton, today East Greenbush, and it then also covered what is now the northern part of Rensselaer and the southern part of Troy. Its earliest settlers arrived in the 1620s at Bath, annexed to Rensselaer in 1902. Wynantskill was settled near the end of the 18th century, with a Dutch Reformed church around 1794 and a post office in 1820, and it sits on NY Route 66, Main Avenue.
In Wynantskill, the North Greenbush Town Office is at 2 Douglas Street and the North Greenbush Public Library at 141 Main Avenue. Defreestville was Blooming Grove until about 1830, when it took the name of David M. De Freest, who owned a tavern there, and the mid-18th-century DeFreest Homestead of Dutch settler Philip DeFreest stands inside the Rensselaer Technology Park and has been on the National Register since 1977.
Roads and campuses drove the later growth. US 4 was widened and straightened in 1931, suburban building along it followed the 1960s construction of I-90 and the Patroon Island Bridge, and I-90 Exit 8 opened in 1996. RPI began developing the technology park in the 1970s, and more than 70 tenants employed over 2,400 people there as of 2009. The southern part of the Hudson Valley Community College campus is in North Greenbush too, including Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, a 6,500-seat stadium, along with La Salle Institute on Williams Road, an independent Catholic school for grades 6 through 12 founded in 1850, and the New York State National Guard Armory.
Snyder’s Lake is the largest lake in North Greenbush, near the eastern border and open to the public, and Dedrick Park at 204 Geiser Road is the town’s official lifeguarded public beach, where kayaks, canoes and paddleboards are allowed.
The 2024 American Community Survey counts 934 Hispanic or Latino residents in East Greenbush (5.6 percent) and 525 in North Greenbush (3.9 percent), and 666 in the East Greenbush hamlet alone, 10.1 percent of it. A weeknight Latin dance floor sits 21 minutes from Clinton Heights, 22 from Town Hall and Wynantskill, 18 from Defreestville and 17 from Hudson Valley Community College, with your first class free.
