Why Guilderland Dancers Choose Baila

Guilderland spreads across 58.7 square miles, from Crossgates in the east to the Helderberg foothills at Altamont, so the first question is usually the drive. McKownville, Crossgates and Westmere are 12 to 15 minutes from the studio on the Northway, the library on Western Avenue is about 20, and Altamont is 31. Classes start at 6:30 PM on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and Wednesday opens with Zumba® at 5:30 PM.

This is also a town that shows up for things. Its public library logs 343,144 visits a year, the Altamont Fair, first held in 1893, still runs each summer, and the University at Albany, with 17,567 students, has a portion of its campus in McKownville. The 2024 American Community Survey counts 2,191 Hispanic or Latino residents, 5.9 percent of the town. Salsa, bachata and rueda suit that habit, because you learn them by dancing with other people.

Felix Ortiz teaches the Latin side of the week himself: Monday bachata, Tuesday and Wednesday salsa through Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced On-1, and Wednesday casino rueda. Bob Fullan leads Thursday’s East Coast Swing, and Veronica Puente runs Wednesday’s Zumba®. Your first class is free, and starting with Thursday swing brings the SalSwing Social along with it.

About Guilderland

Guilderland, New York: Dutch Patroon Land, the Normans Kill & the Helderberg Foothills

Salsa classes near Guilderland, NY begin in a town of 36,848 people in Albany County, immediately west of the city of Albany. Guilderland covers 58.7 square miles (57.9 of them land), is crossed by I-87, I-90 and US 20, and runs from the Albany line at McKownville and Crossgates to the Helderberg foothills at Altamont. Felix Ortiz teaches Latin dance for the whole span at 952 Troy-Schenectady Road in Latham, about 20 minutes from the town center.

The name comes from Gelderland, a province of the Netherlands, and the town was formed in 1803 on a suggestion from resident Jeremiah Van Rensselaer, then Lieutenant-Governor of New York. The ground was already old Dutch property: it belonged to Rensselaerswyck, the manor Patroon Kiliaen van Rensselaer began in 1629, and Dutch farms followed along the Normans Kill. In 1712 Rhine Valley emigrants passing through recorded the Helderberg escarpment as Hellebergh, the first religious service came in 1734, and a Dutch Reformed church went up in 1750.

Industry came early. The de Neufville family opened a large glass factory in 1795, and the hamlet of Hamilton, today’s Guilderland, grew around it until British imports ended the factory’s run after the War of 1812. French’s Mills, near Guilderland Center, was a textile-mill hamlet powered by falls on the Normans Kill. Just east of Guilderland Center, Loyalists fought Schenectady militia and Rhode Island Continental troops in a Revolutionary War battle, and the victory let the Rhode Island contingent move on to Saratoga.

Civic life has a few fixed addresses. Guilderland Town Hall, at 5209 Western Turnpike, seats the town government and the police department headquarters, which keeps a sub-station at Crossgates Mall. The Guilderland Public Library at 2228 Western Avenue (US-20) is the town’s cultural center, with 343,144 patron visits a year and library cards in the hands of 59 percent of residents. Most of the town belongs to the Guilderland Central School District, formed in 1953, whose only high school is Guilderland High School; the district also runs Farnsworth Middle School and five elementary schools. In the west, the Village of Altamont is a political entity inside the town, and the Altamont Free Library at 179 Main Street serves it.

Recreation and heritage fill the middle of the map. Tawasentha Park spreads over 200 acres on Route 146 and opened in 1969, with gardens, tennis and pickleball courts, pools, hiking trails along the Normans Kill and a winter recreation area. In Guilderland Center, the Mynderse-Frederick House, a colonial-style house built in 1802 and a tavern from the 1840s, is now a local history museum on the National Register of Historic Places, one of 37 NRHP entries in the town. The Altamont Fairgrounds host the Altamont Fair, first held in September 1893 and renamed the Albany, Schenectady and Greene County Fair Association in 1946, which made it New York State’s first three-county fair. The grounds also hosted NASCAR Grand National races in 1951 and 1955 and were the home track of 1951 Indianapolis 500 champion Lee Wallard.

The east edge meets the city. Crossgates Mall, the largest indoor shopping center in the Capital District, fills 1.7 million square feet with 212 stores and restaurants and an 18-screen IMAX Regal theater, and it sits in the northeastern corner of Westmere, a hamlet of 7,560 people at the 2020 census. McKownville lies along the eastern town line, and a portion of the University at Albany uptown campus, part of a university that enrolled 17,567 students in 2024, falls inside it. Those three corners are the closest Guilderland addresses to Latham: 12 to 13 minutes from McKownville and Crossgates, 15 from Westmere, by way of I-87 N and exit 6.

Beyond the Albany line the map fills with hamlet names. Altamont, a village of 1,675 people at the 2020 census, has a name that means “high mountain.” Fort Hunter sits on NY Route 146 near the Albany-Schenectady county line. Hartmans Corners has Fullers to its northwest on Route 20, Dunnsville and Parkers Corners occupy the northwestern part of the town, and Meadowdale lies by the southern town line.

The 2024 American Community Survey counts 2,191 Hispanic or Latino residents in Guilderland, 5.9 percent of the town, with a median age of 39.4. For those neighbors and for every other Guilderland dancer, the weekly classes are in Latham. From Western Avenue, take US-20 E to NY-155 E on New Karner Road, then Albany Shaker Road and Troy-Schenectady Road (NY-7); from Crossgates, take the Northway to exit 6 and NY-7 W. Bachata on Monday, salsa on Tuesday and Wednesday, rueda on Wednesday and swing on Thursday are waiting, and your first class is free.

Salsa & Latin Dance Questions From Guilderland

Are there salsa classes near Guilderland, NY?

Yes. Baila Albany Dance Studio, 952 Troy-Schenectady Road in Latham, teaches On-1 salsa in three levels: Beginner on Tuesday at 6:30 PM, Intermediate on Tuesday at 7:30 PM and Advanced on Wednesday at 6:30 PM. Guilderland dancers reach it in about 20 minutes, and the first class is free.

How far is Baila Albany from Guilderland?

About 20 minutes from the Guilderland Public Library on Western Avenue: US-20 E to NY-155 E (New Karner Road), Albany Shaker Road, then Troy-Schenectady Road. Crossgates and McKownville dancers take I-87 N to exit 6 and NY-7 W for a 12 to 13 minute drive, and Altamont runs about 31. Classes meet Monday through Thursday evenings, with Zumba® also on Saturday at 10:00 AM.

Is salsa beginner friendly if I have two left feet?

Yes. Tuesday's 6:30 PM Beginner class is where On-1 salsa starts, and the Intermediate hour at 7:30 PM is the next step up. Your first class is free, so a Guilderland newcomer can try a night before paying anything.

Are there free Latin dance classes near Guilderland?

Yes: the first class is free for new students, whichever night you pick. Reserve it on Punchpass, where the free pass stays valid for 14 days after purchase, then choose from Monday bachata, Tuesday or Wednesday salsa, Wednesday rueda or Zumba®, or Thursday swing. After that, a single class is $15.

Is a class card cheaper than paying per class?

Yes, a card lowers the price per night. At $15 a drop-in, four classes cost $60 against $50 for the four-class card, and eight cost $120 against $100 for the eight-class card. Your free first class comes before either, so Guilderland dancers start at zero.

Is East Coast Swing good for beginners?

Yes. Bob Fullan teaches East Coast Swing to all levels on Thursday at 6:30 PM, and a partner is not required. The class leads into the SalSwing Social at 7:30 PM, where a new dancer can practice the steps on the social floor.

Is there a Zumba or dance-fitness class for adults near Guilderland?

Veronica Puente leads Zumba® Latin Dance Experience on Wednesdays at 5:30 PM, and Jason "Zumba J" leads a weekly Saturday 10:00 AM session, both open to all levels and set to Latin rhythms. From Crossgates and McKownville the studio is about 13 minutes away, so Wednesday's workout is an easy drive from the east side of town.

Where do Guilderland dancers go for a social after class?

Baila hosts the SalSwing Social every Thursday at the studio, 7:30 to 11:30 PM, right after the 6:30 PM East Coast Swing class. The social is $10 on its own or $15 with a lesson, and your free first East Coast Swing class covers that night's social too.

Guilderland, Your First Class at Baila Costs Nothing

Choose a Monday-to-Thursday class on Punchpass and head for Latham, down Western Avenue to New Karner Road or up the Northway from Crossgates. Start with East Coast Swing on a Thursday, and the SalSwing Social that follows comes with your free first class.
