Why Saratoga Springs Dancers Choose Baila

Google’s related searches for dance classes in the city carry a question in plain English: “Where is a Latin party to dance salsa in Saratoga today?” A Facebook post title puts it another way, “Salsa and bachata dance places in Saratoga?” Baila answers with a standing weekly floor in Latham: salsa, bachata and rueda classes Monday through Wednesday, then Thursday’s SalSwing Social from 7:30 to 11:30 PM, $10 on its own or $15 with a lesson.

Saratoga Springs dancers can make Thursday a weekly habit. East Coast Swing with Bob Fullan opens the night, and the SalSwing Social that follows puts the steps to music.

Make the Northway trip count, because Baila’s evenings stack. Monday holds two bachata hours, Tuesday runs Beginner salsa into Intermediate, Wednesday moves from Advanced salsa at 6:30 PM into Casino Rueda at 7:30 PM, and Thursday’s swing class flows into the social. Felix Ortiz, a Bronx native who moved to Albany in 2000, built the week that way. Your first class is free, and a first East Coast Swing class includes that night’s social.

About Saratoga Springs

Saratoga Springs, New York: Mineral Springs, Racing Season & the Northway South to Latham

Salsa classes near Saratoga Springs, NY begin in a resort city of 28,491 people (2020 census) in Saratoga County, where mineral springs have drawn visitors for more than 200 years and the official slogan is “Health, History, and Horses.” The city covers 29.1 square miles, I-87 and U.S. 9 pass alongside and through it, NY 29, NY 50, NY 9N and NY 9P lead in, and Saratoga Lake lies just to the south. Felix Ortiz teaches Latin dance for the whole Northway corridor at 952 Troy-Schenectady Road in Latham, 25.3 miles and about 33 minutes south on I-87.

The springs came first. Sir William Johnson was brought to them in 1767 to treat war wounds, and Gideon Putnam built the first hotel and laid out the roads. Saratoga Springs was settled in 1819, incorporated as a village in 1826 and became a city in 1915. The Saratoga and Schenectady Railroad arrived in 1832, and by 1870 the city was a leading upscale resort whose Grand Union Hotel was, in its day, the largest hotel in the world. Farther out, the Battles of Saratoga were fought about 15 miles southeast of the city, in the Town of Stillwater.

Downtown history still stands in Congress Park, where the Canfield Casino, remodeled after the gambling houses of Monaco, welcomed guests including Ulysses S. Grant, Cornelius Vanderbilt and Mark Twain before the City bought it in 1907 and turned it into a museum. Saratoga Race Course opened in 1863 on Union Avenue, while Broadway, the downtown spine, lies inside the Broadway Historic District.

The Saratoga Spa State Park spreads across 2,379 acres of mineral springs, historic bath houses and hiking trails, with the Gideon Putnam Resort and the Saratoga Automobile Museum, at 110 Avenue of the Pines, inside it. Its outdoor amphitheater, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, is the summer home of the New York City Ballet for one week in July and the Philadelphia Orchestra for three weeks in August, and it has hosted a weekend-long jazz festival since 1978. The Saratoga Spring Water Co. on Geyser Road has operated since 1872.

Live music fills the downtown rooms. Caffe Lena, founded in 1960, is one of the oldest continually running coffeehouses in the country, and Bob Dylan played there in 1961. Universal Preservation Hall is an 1871 High Victorian Gothic building at 25 Washington Street, restored as a year-round arts and community events venue that seats up to 700, and the Saratoga Music Hall adds another stage. On the arts side, Yaddo, a 400-acre artists’ community founded in 1900 by Spencer and Katrina Trask, has hosted 68 Pulitzer Prize-winning authors.

On the city’s northern border, Skidmore College, a private liberal arts college at 815 N Broadway, enrolls about 2,700 students, and its Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery is the campus’s main arts museum. Out on Jefferson Street, the Saratoga Casino Hotel at number 342 pairs a harness racing track with a hotel, video gaming, a nightclub and restaurants.

The 2024 American Community Survey counts 1,562 Hispanic or Latino residents among Saratoga Springs’ 28,631 people, 5.5 percent, with a median age of 42.4. Anyone in the city who wants to dance salsa has a weekly home 33 minutes south on I-87 S: Monday bachata, Tuesday and Wednesday salsa, Wednesday rueda, Thursday swing and the SalSwing Social, with your first class free.
