The 2020 census counted 5,541 households in Latham: 30.5 percent of them one-person households and 49.4 percent married-couple households, with a median age of 43.5. A partner dance room has a place for both. Singles walk into a space full of people on the same learning curve, and couples pick up a shared skill, whether that means a Monday bachata hour or a Wednesday rueda wheel.
Peter Harris Plaza sits on Troy-Schenectady Road, the same road that runs past Latham Farms at number 579, so a class slots into an evening without a detour. Wednesday opens at 5:30 PM with Zumba®, while Monday, Tuesday and Thursday get going at 6:30 PM. Thursday’s East Coast Swing needs no partner, and the SalSwing Social that follows turns the week’s lessons into a night on the floor.
Felix Ortiz, who has danced and taught Latin styles for more than 25 years, leads the Latin side of the week: Monday bachata, Tuesday and Wednesday salsa, Wednesday rueda. The free first class is reserved on Punchpass and stays valid for 14 days after purchase, so the studio at 952 Troy-Schenectady Road is an easy first stop for anyone in Latham curious about salsa.
About Latham
Salsa classes in Latham, NY meet at Peter Harris Plaza, 952 Troy-Schenectady Road, a Latham, NY 12110 address on the Verdoy side of the corridor. Verdoy’s center is about a minute (0.4 mile) away, and the Latham Circle is about 7 minutes down the road. The name Latham on a mailbox covers more ground than the hamlet itself: ZIP 12110 reaches well past the limits NYSDOT marks, while many northern and northeastern addresses carry a Cohoes ZIP and many eastern ones a Watervliet ZIP. Latham proper is a census-designated place in the Town of Colonie, Albany County, a dense suburb north of Albany with 13,802 residents (ACS 2024 5-year), crossed by US Route 9 and NY Route 7, with I-87 also running through the town.
The corner that gave the hamlet its name is where Troy-Schenectady Road, the road the studio sits on, meets Old Loudon Road. Old Loudon Road dates to 1755, when it was built during the French and Indian War to carry troops and provisions from Albany toward Lake George and Ticonderoga. The Troy and Schenectady Turnpike followed in 1802, the turnpike whose name Troy-Schenectady Road still shares, and Jonas Yearsley, a resident by 1785, built the first hotel near that crossing. Today the intersection carries NY Route 2.
NYSDOT marks the hamlet’s limits at four points: the former Latham Circle Mall entrance to the west, the US 9 and Old Loudon Road Y-intersection to the south, Latham Kiwanis Park at 3 1st Avenue to the east, and the Crescent Bridge over the Mohawk River to the north. The Latham Circle Mall opened at that circle in 1957 as Latham Corners Shopping Center, was enclosed in 1977 and began coming down in March 2013; The Shoppes at Latham Circle at 800 Loudon Road now stands beside it. Out along Troy-Schenectady Road, Latham Farms at number 579 sits 2.3 driving miles from the studio, and Blue Creek circles the area known as Pirate’s Island.
North of the airport, Verdoy, once called Watervliet Center, runs along the Mohawk River on the old New York Central Troy & Schenectady Branch, a rail bed that is now part of the Mohawk Hudson Hike/Bike Trail. A piece of Verdoy traveled south in 1996, when the Verdoy Schoolhouse moved to the grounds of Pruyn House in Newtonville, a Federal and Greek Revival house built between 1824 and 1836 that serves today as the Town of Colonie’s historical and cultural arts center. Boght Corners straddles US 9 at Boght Road and is about 8 minutes from the studio by way of Pollock Road.
The Shakers shaped the ground the airport now occupies. Albany International Airport, at 737 Albany Shaker Road, was built on the Watervliet Shaker settlement site, on the community’s former herb garden, and stretches north to Verdoy; just under 1.6 million passengers departed from it in 2025, breaking the 2004 record of 1.56 million. The Shaker Heritage Society keeps what remains of the first Shaker community, established in 1776 and a National Register site since 1973, where Mother Ann Lee is buried and the restored 1848 meetinghouse hosts public events such as concerts. The Ann Lee Pond Nature and Historic Preserve on Heritage Lane is about 0.3 kilometers away, and Shaker High School on Watervliet Shaker Road is the high school of the North Colonie Central School District, which serves Latham.
Most of the places above sit about 7 to 8 minutes from the studio, so a class night at Peter Harris Plaza fits a Latham evening: bachata on Monday, salsa on Tuesday and Wednesday, rueda on Wednesday, swing and the social on Thursday, with your first class free.
