Schenectady already moves to Latin music. The 2020 census counted 8,758 Hispanic or Latino residents, 13.1 percent of the city’s 67,047 people, and Latin Nights at Rivers Casino bring Alex Torres and His Latin Orchestra to the Van Slyck’s room, where the casino’s listing for the night named free dance lessons from Felix Ortiz. If a night like that has you wondering what the dancers’ feet are doing, the full weekly program is 19 minutes away in Latham.
Union College and SUNY Schenectady County Community College are the city’s two colleges, and Baila fits what comes after the class day or the workday: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday begin at 6:30 PM, and Wednesday’s first class, Zumba®, starts at 5:30 PM. Baila also takes the dance out to Schenectady County: its Havana Night Summer Series at Wolf Hollow Brewing Company in West Glenville pairs a free salsa lesson with open dancing, and the series is in its fourth year.
Felix Ortiz grew up in the Bronx, has lived in the Capital Region since 2000, and teaches the Latin styles he has danced for more than 25 years. Begin with Tuesday’s Beginner On-1 class, stay for Intermediate at 7:30 PM, move up to Advanced on Wednesday, and take the steps to Thursday’s SalSwing Social. Your first class is free.
About Schenectady
Salsa classes near Schenectady, NY begin in the county seat of Schenectady County, a city of 67,047 people in the 2020 census and the ninth most populous in New York State. It sits near the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson rivers, about 15 miles northwest of Albany. Felix Ortiz teaches its dancers at 952 Troy-Schenectady Road in Latham, 19 minutes away by Union Street and NY-7 E.
Dutch colonists founded the city on the south side of the Mohawk River in the 17th century, and its name comes from the Mohawk word skahéhtati, meaning beyond the pines. The Stockade Historic District, designated in 1965 as New York’s first historic district, still holds dozens of Dutch and English colonial houses. The Schenectady County Historical Society keeps its museum and the Grems-Doolittle research library at 32 Washington Avenue, in a house built in 1895.
Union College, chartered in 1795, was the first nondenominational institution of higher education in the United States and the second college established in New York. Its campus at 807 Union Street is the oldest planned college campus in the country, and the sixteen-sided Nott Memorial of 1875 stands at its center. East of campus, General Electric developed the GE Realty Plot, about 90 acres of planned housing that joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and hosts an annual House and Garden Tour.
General Electric and the American Locomotive Company made Schenectady an industrial powerhouse. The GE Main Plant, built in 1886, stands in Bellevue, and GE also made the city a broadcasting pioneer: WGY was the second commercial radio station in the country, and in 1928 GE produced the first regular television broadcasts in the United States from here, today’s WRGB. The population peaked near 95,000 in 1930, and the city is building a new economy partly on renewable energy. Mount Pleasant, the city’s most populated neighborhood, and Bellevue were annexed from the Town of Rotterdam in 1903, while Woodlawn grew as an early-1900s suburb across the whole southeastern section and joined the city in 1923.
Downtown is built around Proctors, the 1926 vaudeville and movie house at 432 State Street that is now a multi-stage arts center. Between Proctors and City Hall, the McKim, Mead and White building of 1933, runs the Jay Street Marketplace, partly closed to cars and lined with independent businesses and eateries; North Jay Street is the city’s Little Italy. The calendar fills with Little Italy StreetFest on the second Saturday of September, Jazz on Jay on summer Thursdays, Schenectady County SummerNight on the second Friday of July, and a Caribbean Festival in Central Park, where a rose garden and Iroquois Lake sit on land the city bought in 1913. Every Sunday from 10 AM to 2 PM the Schenectady Greenmarket gathers around City Hall from May to October and moves inside Proctors from November to April.
Latin dance has a history on these stages. In May 2018 the GE Theatre at Proctors held a Salsa Dance Night with Alex Torres and His Latin Orchestra, a half-hour dance lesson and Cuban food from Carmen’s Cafe of Troy. Rivers Casino Schenectady at 1 Rush Street, where Van Slyck’s room hosts Latin Nights, opened its doors to a Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration Kick-Off on September 16, 2023. With 8,758 Hispanic or Latino residents counted in 2020, 13.1 percent of the city, the audience for salsa and bachata here is a neighbor, not a visitor.
Getting to the studio is a straight shot. Schenectady station on Erie Boulevard carries Amtrak’s Ethan Allen, Adirondack, Lake Shore Limited, Maple Leaf and Empire Service routes, and Interstate 890 runs through the city, but dancers coming to class take Union Street to NY-7 E and arrive at Peter Harris Plaza in about 19 minutes. Your first class is free.
